The refrain ordinary refrain over the past decade—since cell phone started snap pictures—has been that mobile phones resolve kill unconnected cameras. Now it seem likes phones are selection cameras to prosper. Sales are up, even in a crummy economy. Everyone is a photographer now, even if they just post a few phone snapshots to Facebook. More would-be Ansel Adams loyalists are discovering that they essentially like to take photos. They learn to recognize the advantages of a proper camera, whether it’s a extended-zoom solid or a full-fledged, interchangeable-lens DLSR, and improve from their lowly camera phones when they can.

But that grass us wonder about cheap point-and-shoot: They’re meant to take good-sufficient photos for distribution online, just like the cameras built into phones like the Apple iPhone 4S, on evaluation here. The most excellent camera is the one you have, and when your iPhone is forever in your pocket, it’s hard to substantiate a pocket cam, even if it easily costs $100.

We’re review the 4S as a point-and-discharge, not because we suppose improbable presentation, but because we desire to see if its camera is good enough to replace a separate pocket camera. (And just to be clear, we’re hard the 8-megapixel, rear-facing camera, not the front-facing, VGA-quality camera.)
